From Whaling to Whale Watching with NECWA

From Whaling to Whale Watching with NECWA In-Person

Join Carol “Krill” Carson for a program on the history of whaling and the pivot to whale watching. Historically, whaling has been an important life line for many native peoples around the world. But the advent of commercial whaling tipped the balance in favor of whalers who wiped out the majority of whale populations around the world. Today whaling still continues in a few countries, but the majority of whaling countries had shifted over to whale watching, a more eco-friendly and financially beneficial activity for those communities that offer whale watching from their shores. Learn about the first whale watching company on the east coast and how this company lead the way in humpback whale research. And hear how a famous Provincetown tuna fisherman taught researchers how to disentangle free-swimming whales using whaling technques.

Carol “Krill” Carson is a marine biologist who has worked in New England since 1980. Krill founded NECWA in 2005 and currently directs this all-volunteer nonprofit. NECWA combines research activities with educational outreach and conservation. NECWA is the only organization that rescues and researches “misfit” marine animals, including ocean sunfish, torpedo rays, and triggerfish.
