The Greeks, the Romans and America's Democratic Republic with Dean Nicastro In-Person
Join us with Town of Chatham Select Board Member, Dean Nicastro, as he shares the ancient antecedents of America’s democratic and republican institutions of government, like the concept of a president and separation of powers. Centered on the civilizations of Athens and Rome, the focus will be on major historical developments and the leading personalities of the day. Guided by a generous slide presentation, the talk will provide context around the origin and development of the features of our contemporary American governmental structure.
Dean Nicastro has been a year-round Chatham resident for 33 years. Born in Quincy, he is a graduate of Boston College High School, Harvard College and Harvard Law School. A retired attorney, he served as a Massachusetts Assistant Attorney General, Quincy City Solicitor, and Vice President and General Counsel of the Massachusetts Medical Society. He also worked in private practice. His areas of legal practice included health care law, non-profit corporations, municipal law, real estate, and general civil matters. Much of his legal career focused on advising and representing physicians and physician organizations. Dean is a past president of the American Society of Medical Association Counsel, and a former executive committee vice chair of the Litigation Center of the American Medical Association and State Medical Societies. Dean also taught classical languages (Greek and Latin) at his alma mater B.C. High. Having previously served on the Quincy Planning Board and the Chatham Finance Committee, Dean has been a member of the of the Chatham Select Board since 2015, having been elected 4 times. He currently serves as board chair. Dean enjoys reading historical non-fiction, walking, foreign travel and following the New England Patriots. He also serves as a trustee of the Massachusetts Medical Benevolent Society.
