The Dig & Caleb Nickerson House with Gary Nickerson In-Person

We are kicking Chatham History Month off a little early this year with Gary Nickerson of the Nickerson Family Association, as he joins us to share his work on the dig and arrangement of the exhibit of artifacts in the Caleb Nickerson Homestead, and how the living history museum has helped him to “dig” deeper into his roots as part of the founding family of English settlers in Chatham.

With a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture from UMass Amherst, Gary set his  sights on a career in environmental law. JD in hand, he started a post-grad fellowship in Marine Policy at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.  Thinking he could save the environment only if he acquired trial skills, he signed on as an Assistant District Attorney for the Cape and Islands District. That detour made him realize his real interest and skills lay in the courtroom.  A short term as a Special Assistant United States Attorney was followed by years in private trial practice.  Twenty years on the Superior Court bench, most often in Barnstable Superior Court, capped his career.

Registration is required. Walk-ins welcome but subject to availability. This is an adult program, but suitable for all who are curious.

Chatham History Month 2026 is a month-long celebration of the town’s rich history and heritage. Events throughout June invite residents and visitors to explore historic sites, museums, and cultural landmarks across town.  Check out the Historic Chatham website for more information.
